Was at Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve last Wednesday for mangrove salvaging!

Had a great time enjoying out in nature, catching up with Siswanto whom I spent 25 days with in Philippines!! Hahaha. How time flies!
Remember the deadly Tsunami that hit Aceh in December 2003? According to some articles, should the mangrove had not been removed, it would have been able to break for force of the huge waves and saved thousands of lives. SO why are we neglecting this important element in our ecosystem? Yes you are right, mangrove swamps and stinky, dirty, yuck YET useful. Personally felt that I is meaningful to do my part for the environment.
So Bari was explaining to me on why the hassle of performing Mangrove salvaging. Basically, Sungei Buloh has 3 main ponds and at least of one them is kept drained for birds to enter and feed on the organisms. However, having the mangroves around would discourage them as they wouldn’t be able to sit in that area.
Therefore, Mangrove salvaging is meaningful in 2 ways:
a) encourages birds to stop by and feed on organisms; usually migratory birds that fly here to avoid winter
b) the salvaged mangroves can be planted along our coastlines when they are more grown up
WOW that was totally new to me! Never fail to learn something new whenever im there.
There are 2 species of Mangrove there and we are salvaging the Avicennia alba, mainly because they are more hardy and out of 100, usually 95 survives the salvaging!
Mangrove planting in Concepion, Philippines
Does bring back some memories back in Philippines and I’m wondering how are the mangroves that we planted!
You will never gain back time that has past. Learn to treasure.
Good night.
